There is no need to qualify the next statement in any way: The Audi Quattro has completely changed the face of rallying. The reason for this is very simple. In the years BQ (Before Quattro), a world-class rally car usually had a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, but AQ (After Quattro), to be competitive it needed not only four-wheel drive, but also a massively powerful turbocharged engine. Yet when the new Quattro was first rumoured to be on its way, a few pundits (including, I have to admit, myself) thought that four-wheel drive could never be made to work properly at such speeds. This, then, is my chance to admit that I was wrong, and for me to chronicle the story of the concept, development and early rallying career of the Quattro. Not only have I been enthralled by the way that Audi came to grips with their new competition car (with very little previous experience of top-level competition), but I have also been fascinated to see how Hannu Mikkola, Michele Mouton, Stig Blomqvist and several other drivers have all mastered the Quattro's habits, and were able to find grip and acceleration where every other rally car in the world would be floundering. , The Quattro's biggest leap forward from the 'norm' of the late 1970s, of course, was not just that it had four-wheel drive, but that the installation was very sophisticated indeed. Its most important built-in problem, not at all sorted out in the works cars, was that the engine was mounted too far forward for ideal chassis weight distribution. On the other hand, the rally cars have always been able to call up a great deal of sheer brute horsepower and torque, which has usually been able to make up for other deficiencies. Perhaps the Quattro could not have been turned into a rally car so quickly, let alone into a potential winner, by any other organization. To win a World Championship event second time out, and a mere six weeks after homologation had been achieved, was a triumph of Teutonic application over a lack of experience, for Audi's own works team had only been founded, in a very small way, in 1978. Perhaps, in a few years, we may look back on the Quattromerely as the first, and the crudest, of the four-wheel-drive rallying Super Cars, but that will not mean that it was an ill-conceived machine in the first place. Later there may be rallying 'specials', with engines behind the driver, with glass-fibre bodywork, and with ever more sophisticated drivelines, but they will always be recognized as such — built in tiny numbers to creep around the regulations. Thousands of Quattro road cars are already in use, offering a remarkable blend of style, refinement, high performance and great security of roadholding to their lucky owners, their sophistication having increased at the start of each successive model year. The appearance of a short-wheelbase Quattro towards the end of 1983 reminded me that the whole Audi four-wheel-drive philosophy may still be only in its infancy. Books.
