From the Foreword: ...Caervarfon, particularly in the second half of the nineteenth century, was, as Dr. Lloyd indicates vividly, an exciting place, both economically and culturally. Caernarfon was then at the very heart of Welsh political, religious, and educational life, and the great meetings at the Pavilion were a reflection of that same confident and progressive spirit which had been evident in the activities of ship-owners and ship-builders, slate quarry proprietors and shop-keepers, master mariners and merchants, ship-brokers and the founders of the ship insurance societies in Gwynedd. During the period from 1830 to 1880 the slate quays at Caernarfon were bustling with activity with hundreds of ships and men employed in the export of slate from the quarries of Caernarfonshire to ports in Europe, America, Australia, and many other distant parts. The new middle class, bankers and shop-keepers, teachers and preachers, quarry agents and ship-brokers, invested enthusiastically both in wooden ships built locally and in North America, and in the larger iron ships built in the yards of North East England for locally based shipping companies such as the Arvon, North Wales, Gwynedd and Eryri Shipping Companies. The liveliness of the Welsh press was reflected in the number of Welsh language newspapers published here in Caernarfon and Dr. Lloyd has wisely made particularly good use of the Caernarvon and Denbigh Herald to reconstruct much that happened during the period. Combined with manuscripts sources such as the Registers of Shipping and Crew Agreement Lists now housed in the Gwynedd Archives, and documentary material held elsewhere, this has enabled Dr. Lloyd to remind us, as he did in the case of Harlech and Barmouth, of the richness of studies in local history It is good to know that he has a similar study of Pwllheli on the stocks...
