He gives copious references, and many of the actual volumes he used survive. So what he tells us can show how it was possible to pursue patristic theology with the resources available in fifteenth-century England, and shed light both on Gascoigne's own scholarship and the librarles he used. I have aimed to do this, first analytically and then systematically in lists, so that the discussion and the following lists form, I hope, a coherent whole, approaching the same subject from different angles. If the lists present the detailed evidence on which the discussion is based, the discussion offers an interpretation of the significant features of the lists. Gascoigne's reading, use of books and libraries, and scholarship are first discussed. Then list i gives a picture of Gascoigne's reading based on his citations from more than three hundred works. There is no very good match between these books and the fifty-odd Gascoigne is known to have owned, listed in list ii. Gascoigne's collection is well documented, but not remarkable in size or character for a man of his position. It gives an imperfect idea of his reading, but it does show something of the development of his interests, and the list is arranged chronologically as far as possible to bring this out. It implies the need for the use of libraries shown in list iii. There is a much closer match between this list and the reading shown in list i. Here we see how it was possible, as well as necessary, for a patristic scholar in the fifteenth century to use a host of libraries, by no means all in the University or even in Oxford. Gascoigne is known to have used one hundred and twenty-one items in thirty-two different collections, so he provides evidence for the state of many libraries in his day. The sources for this list are Gascoigne's own references, often unusually precise, and the books he annotated. for he annotated library books as well as his own. Thèse annotated books - nearly a hundred of them - are the subject of list iv, which provides a guide and supplement to lists ii and iii."
