A chronicle of this Club whose members included most of the great names in British typography and which was an important influence on the course of graphic design. From the preface : "Why write, yet alone publish the history of a small, highly-specialised dining club ? The answer could be that an addition to the corpus of human knowledge required no justification, but, to be more specific, the fifty years of the Double Crown Club do seem worth recording as the Club has acted as a catalyst in the transformation of graphic communication, a matter of no small importance to modern civilisation. The Club can also be seen as a microcosm of half a century of change in taste and outlook in printing and the graphic arts. There is also the fascination of Club personalities, some of whom perceptibly changed the look of printed material for the better over the years. It is true that the Club's first president, Holbrook Jackson, said in 1935 that it had not been the business of the Double Crown Club to make history, being content that history should be made by its members, 'who have been responsible for most of the events of typographical importance in this country since 1924'. But those members used the Club as a forum for the exchange of ideas and could not have been unaffected by what they heard and saw. Copy No. 427.
