There is in the Public Record Office in London a large file of rolls of the justices of gaol delivery for various counties for the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These rolls contain information on matters of local interest and matters of interest to legal, social, and economic historians. The roll for Cambridgeshire printed in this volume covers a brief period, 1332- 1334, but one that is significant in the development of criminal procedures. As the cases on the roll show, the jury of indictment as a means of accusation was only slowly replacing the appeal, a process not generally completed until the end of the century. The crimes dealt with were chiefly homicides and thefts. The numerous attempts to involve accessories in the latter suggest that such offences were frequently the work of individuals working in groups, not alone. Also the number of offenders who came from other counties suggests that studies based on gaol delivery rolls and other records of neighbouring counties may provide information on conditions in Cambridgeshire as well as a broader picture of criminal activities in the early fourteenth century. The roll which is in Latin is printed in full with summaries of the cases in English. Elisabeth G. Kimball has retired from teaching and more recently from administrative work in connexion with college admissions in the United States. She has edited rolls of the fourteenth and fifteenth century justices of the peace for the counties of Bedford, Gloucester, Lincoln, Oxford, Salop, and Warwickshire.. First Edition. Hard Cover.
