Balfour-Browne was best known for his sketches and paintings of deer and the major part of this book is devoted to the sketches that he made on the hill during the period 1909-1957. He was also a keen student of stalking and the letters that he left provide much good advice to any stalker. There are also several charming descriptions of his memorable days. This is the text of the book, printed virtually as he wrote it. It is perhaps less well known that Balfour-Browne started his artistic life mainly as a bird painter and that he was student of George Lodge. I have therefore included alongside the text a number of the sketches that he left of birds, trees, landscapes, and animals to give some idea of the range of his art. The final section of the book is a picture gallery. It shows stags, large and small, in their various poses, followed by sketches of typical scenes of a stalk, and finally two panoramas of hinds and calves." (Antony Atha).
