'The best Bach singer of his time', said Sir David Wilcocks in a public address, for such was the esteem in which the bass-baritone Sir Keith Falkner - one of England's finest 20th-century singers - was held. Born in 1900, he was a chorister at New College, Oxford, under the tutelage of Sir Hugh Allen. Following a brief stint in the Royal Naval Air Services in the Great War, he enrolled at the Royal College of Music, where Harry Plunckett Greene took him under his wing. He also studied in Berlin and Paris with Theodore Lierhammer, Deanne Dossert and Yves Tinayre. From 1925 until the Second World War he sang at all the principal festivals in England and toured America eight times, appearing with the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Cincinatti, St. Louis and Philadelphia Orchestras. He travelled to South Africa and to Europe, singing with all the leading artists and conductors of his time. His work was mainly in oratorio and recital, and is perhaps best remembered for his 'Christus' in Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Spotted by Warner Brothers while on tour in America, he eventually made three films at Teddington Studios. Falkner re-enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1939. In 1946, as a member of the British Council, he was psoted to Rome as Music Ambassador to promote the interchange of Anglo/Italian music and musicians. In 1950, Cornell University wished to open a voice department within its Music School and offered the position to Falkner as teacher and performer; a position he held for ten years. Many wanted Falkner back home and his name was put forward to be Director of the Royal College of Music. For fourteen years he gave this post all his energies, both in the administration of the College and in enhancing its reputation throughout the world. This wide-ranging biography paints a vivid picture of a highly gifted musician, administrator and sportsman.
