Unpag. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - "Bits and Pieces" was the title Beuys gave to the collection he assembled for me over the years from the early seventies to his death injanuary 1986. There are many wonderful collections of Beuys' work in existence, several of them containing large numbers of major works on a huge scale, like the collection of Dr Erich Marx, or hundreds, perhaps thousands, of superb drawings and watercolours, like the treasure trove of the Van der Grinten brothers. "Bits and Pieces" is, as the title suggests, neither large in scale -though it is in scope - nor immediately splendid in appearance. What is unique is that it was deliberately given to me piece by piece to build up a miniature archive of Beuys' concerns and working processes. Beuys had a very deliberate strategy with his collectors, and 'fed' each collection to give it a particular character. This was partly because he never had a single commercial gallery to represent him or organise things for him. If an exhibition was requested, he would often phone up one of his collectors and ask them to oblige the museum with a ready-made show he knew would represent a particular aspect of his work. In the case of "Bits and Pieces" the aspect that is most characteristic is fundamental to Beuys' attitude to art and life: there is no division between livine and beine an artist. Hence the well-known saying "Everyone is an artist", since the process of living itself is the most creative art form. (Caroline Tisdall).
