The extended sub-title to this local history states that it covers the northern King Country districts of Waitanguru, Mangaotaki, Ngapaenga and Mairoa through "a collection of memories depicting optimism, disaster and progress." As the King Country was one of the last areas in NZ to be opened up for Europeam settlement it was not until the latter years of the 1800s and the early 1900s that serious development began. It was the 75th anniversary of that era that provided the incentive for this fine book, published in 1990 and based around the recollections of many contributors, particularly those long associated with the district and its development. Life for the early settlers was hard, often lonely, with conditions primative and the elements not always kindly. Like all good local histories this one appear to have covered every aspect of the not always "good old days" for there were fires, floods, storms, epidemics, not to mention two world wars and the Great Depression. Farming and timber milling were two of the early sources of endeavour and income and gradually the amenities and activities that form the basis of a community were established, accompanied by security, permanance, industry and prosperity. A key ingredient of any local history is the extent and quality of illustration --- here "Waitanguru" scores high marks with an amazing collection of historic photographs included, often several images to a page and, as with much of the text material, these were sourced locally, an indication of the community support it attracted. First edition of 1990. 208 pages including appendices, b/w photographs throughout, drawings, maps etc and photo end-papers. Blue hard covers VG+. former owner name in ink of half-title, otherwise internally excellent. Colour pictorial DJ is VG with one tape repaired tear front top adjacent spine, few short tears, creasing to rear top edge, some surface wear at rear panel flap. Weight approaches 1.1kgs unpacked; would require additional postage for international delivery.
