New Zealand's iconic cabbage tree was important medicinally, symbolically and as a food source to ancient Maori and became an immediate attraction to pioneer European artists, featuring in many of the earliest landscapes. In this all--inclusive study of the Cabbage Tree Peter Simpson examines its ancient origns and its close relatives world-wide. This occurs in Part One of the book, "The Natural World of the Cabbage Tree". Part Two, "The Maori World of the Cabbage Tree, Te Kouka" explores the various ways Maori used the tree and its symbolic and spiritual associations. Part Three "The Pakeha World of the Cabbage Tree" includes the culture of the trees, their uses in art and design. Part Four "Integrating Three Worlds: Sustaining the Cabbage Tree" covers the recent threat to the tree in NZ from a disease know as "Sudden Death." (The author played a leading part in research on this disease.), Conservation measures and the future of the species are also studied in this Part --- each Part has a number of related chapters. (Human/animal interaction with cabbage trees was judged to be the main cause of the "Sudden Death" disease.) "Dancing Leaves" is probably the most diligently researched and expansive work dealing with a single NZ native tree species. This copy a first edition of 2000 from Canterbury University Press, with the Department of Conservation supporting publication. 324 pages including notes, bibliography and index, Lavishily illustrated throughout with more that 600 images, the vast majority in colour, including many excellent colour photographs taken by Peter Simpson, also many diagrams, drawings, pioneer art, stamps, designs and maps. Colour pictorial card covers are NF, text block also NF, no inscriptions. This high quality publication is an iconic addition to NZ botanical literature. A heavy book, just over 1.2 kg unpacked; would require additional postage for international delivery.
