183 pages. Includes bibliographical references. This text provides a basis for reflection upon one of the most important Professional, ethical issues of our time - that of euthanasia. Writing in an expository mode, the authors explore the political, legal and cultural issues of euthanasia/assisted suicide. To broaden the base of reflection, the authors also proffer the perspective of palliative care as a choice for the terminally ill perspective that is sometimes poorly understood by health professionals and the community at large. Euthanasia/assisted suicide is a subject which warrants deep reflection as a basis for lively debate within the Australian community; this reflection and debate has a particular significance for all health professionals. The authors sharpen this significance by drawing freely on their shared background in professional nursing. Professor Megan-Jane Johnstone is one of Australia's foremost nursing scholars, renowned internationally for her scholarly research in the areas of nursing and health care ethics. The primary focus of her work has been on: on patients´ rights, cross-cultural ethics, patient safety ethics, professional conduct, and end-of-life ethics with a specific focus on end-of-life decision-making in an ageing society. She has published widely on health care ethics, including the internationally acclaimed books: "Bioethics a nursing perspective" and "Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representations and the Politics of Euthanasia Constructing Risk and Selling Death in an Ageing Society". She writes regularly on nursing ethics for the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Journal. Lately, she has been leading a NBVLL funded project investigating 'Nursing roles and strategies in end-of-life decision making involving older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds admitted to Victorian hospitals for end-of-life care'.
