This record of the operations of the British Phosphate Commission was published to mark the 50th anniversary of its establishment in 1920, the constituent members the UK, Australia and New Zealand. However, mining began on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean in 1898 with the Pacific islands of Nauru and Ocean later becoming involved and were the main sources of the material for most of the Commission's existance. It was formed in 1920 after mandate over Nauru was granted to the British from Germany. In WWII the three islands were occupied by the Japaness and mining did nor resume till 1946 as specialiesed loading facilities had to be restored. An interesting and well compiled account of one of the Pacific's lesser known commercial activities. Unpaginated but about 90 text pages, colour, b/w photos throughout, e/paper maps. Brown hard covers with silver spine titles VG+, text block excellent, colour photographic DJ VG+ with two tiny tears, chip. Size: 31cm deep by 24cm.
