This book examines the concepts, values and structures which occupy a central place in traditional Western culture which have supported the belief that an elite group should rule the institutions of each society, and that some societies should rule over others. The elite group which traditionally rules in Western societies, and which still continues to rule in "democracies" such as the United States, is drawn mostly from the ranks of upper-class white males. For this reason this book is also a study of the values and norms which have supported white male supremacy. The result of this elite rule is group oppression: the use of masses of people defined by group and class to per=form the labor necessary to run the society, and the exclusion of these same people from the basic decision-making processes which determine the society's general course and direction. About the authors: John L. Hodge received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Yale University in 1968; Donald K. Struckmann received his J.D. in law from Hastings College of the Law, San Francisco in 1974; and Lynn Dorland Trost received her M.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Riverside in 1970.
