Johan, not yet thirty, bravely establishes a homestead with his wife, Hulda, and their children Per and Helga. Life on the frontier in 1870 is difficult, at best. The Lindstroms and area neighbors are fortified by their extended Lindsborg and Smoky Valley "community," which is centered around settlers belonging to the First Swedish Agricultural Company of Chicago, and by deep religious faith tempered by the Swedish pietistic Iasare (readers) movement. Prairie life is treacherous, even hostile at times. At first, most of the new Swedish-Americans live in dugouts, creating special problems. Rewards of the new life include religious freedom. Church, family, the community with supportive neighbors, the Bolagshus (company house), and new friends and experiences of fledgling Lindsborg make the challenges surmountable. The festivities and joys of a first Christmas in the new land, their Christian faith, the beginning of schools, the rewards of hard labor and mixed bounties of the land, romance, and the closeness of the people are among the foundations for new life in the Smoky Valley- with good times and bad.
