Risk Management: An Accountability Guide for University and College Boards Janice M. Abraham, This book will lay out principles and a process to guide senior university administration to plan for risk and for the board to support a culture within the institution that embraces and prepares for risk. This ensures that risks won’t postpone the completion of plans and significantly distract the institution from meeting its goals. After reading this book, board members should be able to: 1) Support college and university administrators in implementing a streamlined process to identify, assess, manage, and report risks. Section 1 will introduce the importance of institutional risk management, the external forces that shape the risk environment for higher education, and an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process model that administrators should use to assess and manage enterprise-wide risks. A good ERM program executed by senior administration should result in reports raised to and addressed at a board level on the most critical risks to achieving an institution’s strategic plan and/or mission. 2) Understand the complexity and breadth of the risks faced by colleges and universities in order to engage in meaningful discussions with campus leaders, asking the tough questions that will help the administration better manage risks. Section 2 introduces specific risks that are likely to appear on most risk registers used by college and university administrators to identify, assess and plan for risks during an ERM process. The background information and questions provided should equip a trustee with both context and the right questions to ask to ensure that administrators are closing gaps and focusing on the right issues.
