Taken from the Introduction: "Ylvisaker's spirituality is the main theme of this book: its development in various emphases; its effect on his church affiliation and his service to the church; its influence upon the students and faculty of Bethany Lutheran College; and its expression in a selection of his writings, several of which appear in print here for the first time. This is not a comprehensive study of the man.... Of necessity this book is selective and illustrative rather than definitive....By presenting a biographical overview, by pursuing defined themes and by sampling his writing this book does at least touch upon the salient points about S. C. Ylvisaker. Foremost among these is that Ylvisaker was a gifted and consistent preacher of the Gospel....Ylvisaker's special ministry was to young men and women pursuing their education while undergoing the process of maturation..... Ylvisaker retained the patience and sensitivity to influence individual students even when he was well along in years. He had no formal training in education or administration. Yet, as President of Bethany from 1930 to 1950 he developed the concepts and the administrative skills to influence young people through institutional policies and programs. It was far from inevitable that Ylvisaker would spend his most productive years in the service of Bethany, an institution of the Norwegian Synod of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church (now the Evangelical Lutheran Synod). He might have used his considerable talents in other ways....Instead, he chose to work for God's kingdom at Bethany, then a high school and two-year college.
