1st Printing. 1 pages. Published in 2015. The filmmaker's breakthrough debut classic. One of the most important films of the 20th century. Manufactured in NTSC in a small and limited press run. Original DVD plastic case with front and back pictorial covers and titles on the cover, back, and spine, as issued. Both the case and the disc are in pristine condition. Manufactured in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Kidlat Tahimik's "Perfumed Nightmare". His ground-breaking film, originally titled in Filipino as "Mababangong Bangungot". His real name is Eric C. DeGuia; his Filipino pseudonym literally means "Lightning Silence". The film's title, a tongue-twister even for native speakers, refers not just to a delirious, cold-sweat nightmare, but to a mysterious nocturnal illness that appears to afflict certain Filipino men, all of them otherwise young and healthy, who die in their sleep. When the autopsy is conducted, all of their vital organs are found to be normal, and the usual suspects, heart attack or stroke, therefore have to be ruled out as the cause of death. William S. Burroughs re-imagines this phenomenon in his masterpiece, "Naked Lunch". Burroughs' use of "bangungot" (there is no equivalent word in English so Burroughs adopts it in his novel) is metaphorical, describing the "death experience" of hallucinogenic drugs, a glimpse of death that one may or may not survive. Kidlat Tahimik uses the term to describe a psychological, sociological, and historical event: He captures nothing less than the whole of Philippine history and experience in 91 minutes, in which he appears as the Filipino Everyman, in a fable about cheerful fatalism (not to be confused with nihilism or pessimism). What is it like to be Filipino, that is, to be human? It is like dying, suddenly and inexplicably, in one's sleep only to wake up to an incomprehensible world of technological marvels that diminish (rather than enhance or magnify) one's dignity and humanity. Made back in 1978, surely this message is even more urgent and relevant today. Formally rigorous and ingenious, the film anticipates the work of the great Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. "At first aspiring to evolve out of his 'savage' origins, Everyman raises a number of significant questions, which he realizes he can only answer by going back to his heritage" (Editorial Reviews). Kidlat Tahimik's aesthetic is probably best described as affectionate ambivalence. He is not a Luddite who rejects high-tech. After all, his chosen art is film, itself a technological invention that depends on constant innovation and breakthroughs, and his cult following is the cosmopolitan, international film audience (his films have never been released commercially in the Philippines). He is instead a visual poet, whose goal is self-expression ("roots") and self-transcendence ("progress"). An absolute "must-have" title for Kidlat Tahimik collectors. This title is a great film. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: There are two variant covers of exactly the same DVD. The image scan shown online is different from this copy. A rare copy thus. Regarded by Werner Herzog, J. Hoberman, and Susan Sontag as a masterpiece. Winner of the International Film Critics Award of the Berlin Film Festival and the American Film Festival Blue Ribbon in 1978 for "Perfumed Nightmare". The most important Filipino film of the 20th century. One of the most brilliant filmmakers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KIDLAT TAHIMIK TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0933621736.
