At certain hard moments since that time, I have wondered mightily whether, given the contrary swell of current political tides, such a place could exist in any territory other than the imagination. Nowhere have I found ready answers, but many places I've found hints, traces, evidence of possibility. Working largely in isolation from one another and without financial resources, thinkers and researchers have been seeking, ever since the birth of the Bomb at Trinity, to conceive ways to take us beyond it. Approaching the Beast from all directions, they appear at first (even to each other) to be describing different animals. And indeed, the literature they have produced is often disparate and unconnected, written for specialists in the field and unread even by those in neighboring disciplines. There is as yet no integrated vision of a world beyond the Bomb. What we have at the moment is a kaleidoscope of images evoked by highly independent and sometimes eccentric imaginations, which nonetheless bear a certain familial resemblance. Our task at this juncture is less to reconcile conflicting perspectives than to extend the insights we already share into a comprehensive alternative understanding of the problem and its possible solutions. This report is not a conclusive statement but a working paper, a shared resour.
