This book is the result of fourteen years as editor of The Applegator, a small community newspaper in Southwestern Oregon. The tales are true as far as I can remember. They cover a lifetime. Those who are mentioned by name were there and are just as guilty as I am. I find everyday events the best fodder for my ramblings in my bimonthly columns. The Applegator is a nonprofit publication that was published by the Applegate Partnership from August 1994 to April 2008. The Partnership was formed in 1993 in response to the timber wars here in the Pacific Northwest. It was a time of spotted owls vs. loggers. From the beginning the Partnership was made up of loggers, environmentalists, ranchers, Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management representatives, academics, and just plain old interested folks who knew we could have owls and still remove some timber from the woods. The Applegator was the avenue to get information on riparian restoration, thinning from below, reforestation, fire management, fuel reduction, and wildlife habitat improvement to the residents in our half-million-acre watershed, which lies in two states (Oregon and California), three counties (Jackson and Josephine in Oregon; Siskiyou in California), with five different resource managers from the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.
