CLIP - The lives of Victorian engineers are a source of general and growing interest and inspiration. A handful are so well known as to be household names. It will probably surprise engineers and historians no less than the general reader to learn from this boo k that George Parker Bidder ought to be included in this illustrious band. Mathematical historians know of him as 'the calculating boy' of the early nineteenth century. Some students of industrial and engineering history know that he later became an engi neer and was associated with Robert Stephenson, but few know more about him than that. The truth is that his life and achievements have been neglected until now although he was a friend and colleague of most of his better known contemporaries and was und oubtedly considered by them to be fully their professional equal - sufficiently esteemed by them to be elected the tenth President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. This neglect of Bidder's extraordinary talents and fascinating career must be due largely to the fact that no biography of him has ever been published, the large collection of documents and other material relating to his life having remained in the posse ssion of the family. To this material - thus fortunately preserved - the author of this book, who is a direct descendant of Bidder, has had unrestricted access. Even the casual reader must agree that he has made good use of it. Moreover, Mr Clark is hims elf an engineer of considerable experience, with a real feeling for the period; he is thus able to place Bidder's life and work properly in the context of his times and to bring his subject to life in a way no 'outsider' biographer ever could. Yet this is more than just the biography of an eminent Victorian. It is clear that Bidder's later achievements rested largely upon his calculating ability. This gift was the key which opened the doors of higher education and professional advancement and the book would not be complete without some attempt to analyse it. This strange mental faculty is possessed by relatively few individuals but keeps recurring in the course of history. The happy chance which enabled Mr Clark to secure the collaboration of Mrs Joyce Linfoot for this task of appreciation is, in its way, as striking as anything else recounted in these pages. The three chapters of Part Four which she has contributed are among the most valuable and interesting parts of the whole book. In them she has analysed Bidder's remarkable capacity and has been able to lay bare his unconventional but highly effective methods, all of which he developed for himself - mostly before he was 13 years old.
