It charts the development of the boys' school story, from its beginnings in the middle of the 18th century to the present day. While Tom Brown's Schooldays, first published in 1857, is often thought to be the first boys' school story, this bibliography identifies almost 40 novels that pre-date it, some by over 50 years. It also lists a further 250 novels from the 19th century, and from the 20th century some 2,000 juvenile novels and 450 adult novels and plays. Also listed are well over 1,000 "pocket library" titles, including the well-known Boys' Friend Library and the Charles Hamilton-dominated Schoolboys' Own Library. While the vast majority of tides in this bibliography are public school stories, other schools haven't been forgotten. Prep schools, grammar schools, co-educational schools, secondary moderns and comprehensives, even approved schools and Borstals are all included - in fact, the only schools absent are primary schools and girls' schools, and schools in countries other than Britain and Ireland. Aimed at collectors of school stories and those interested in particular aspects of the school in literature, this bibliography should prove to be an invaluable guide and checklist.
