Nanzie McLeod, 2006. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 5.5" X 8.5. p/b 493 pages, condition is very good, signed by the author. Some stains to the edge of the pages. It is Glasgow, 1929 and Annie and Eruce, have a splendid society wedding. But as poverty and war clouds blight the Europe of the thirties, Annie has a more immediate problem. Shortly after her daughter Helen is born, Annie suffers inexplicable numb sensations in her hands and frequent bouts of extreme tiredness. Neither her dominating mother, nor her immature husband seem to take these symptoms seriously and offer little support. When war is declared, Annie and her daughter Helen leave Glasgow to live in the family holiday home in Pittenweem. The cottage, though charming is ill equipped to deal with the harsh winters of the early forties. Fortunately they have many good friends and Annie uses her ingenuity and creativity to counteract the wartime shortages. This is a positive and humorous picture of a courageous, adventurous woman and the close bond which unites her with her dreamy, yet observant, daughter. Anyone with an interest in the social history of the early to mid-twentieth century will be fascinated by the detailed descriptions of a vanished way of life - and the complexities of close family relationships.
