For those whose understanding of local political structures is fairly minimal, as well as well-seasoned afficionados, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the behind the-scenes of activity of political campaigning. We are afforded an insight, not only into the nuts and bolts and actual hard work of it all, but also into the type of person for whom politics is a way of life. Right from his early childhood in Glasgow, the author invites us in to see things from his perspective. We share in his vivid childhood memories, and for those of us of a certain age, these passages provide a nostalgic evocation of bygone days. We see the author as an idealistic young man - able to enjoy life - yet aware of inequalities and social injustices, and seeking to employ his energies in making the world a better place. The war, when it comes, with the horrors, not only of Nazi atrocities, but also of Dresden and Hiroshima, only confirms his conviction that killing people is never a Solution, and there are no winners in war. Indeed, as he observes, `Truth was the first casualty'. It is apparent from reading this autobiography that solid common sense and determination are Jack's key assets; which of these qualities has been most to the fore in bringing this book to print is a matter of judgement! He does, however, deserve full support in this venture - so much of Labour's history is unclear through lack of recording.
