Milton Avery Still Lifes 1927 - 1960. Waddington Galleries London. 65pp. Color Illustrations. Milton Avery (b. 1885, Altmar, New York; d. 1965, Woodstock, New York) was a seminal colourist of twentieth century American art. His painting draws on a repertoire of domestic subjects such as family members, animals and landscapes, in common with the realist bent of American Regionalism. However, Avery eschewed illusionistic models in favour of the simplified forms and flat colours developed by the French Post-Impressionists, and notably by Matisse. Simultaneously confusing the realists with his technique and the formalists with his subject matter, Avery's art blurred the distinction between abstraction and figuration. In the 1930s Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko, among others, took inspiration from Avery's purified forms and exuberant use of colour. From 1901 to 1924 Avery worked in Hartford, Connecticut. He had a series of manual jobs in order to support his extended family and during this period he took evening classes in life-drawing at the Connecticut League of Art Students. Late he studied at the School of the Art Society of Hartford. Having dedicated himself to painting in 1925 Avery achieved his mature style in 1943 when he began showing with Paul Rosenberg Gallery. Avery's first public exhibition was a group show at the Annex Gallery, Hartford in 1915. His first solo exhibition was held in New York at the Valentine Gallery in 1935. In 1944 Avery had his first solo museum exhibition at the Phillips Memorial Gallery, Washington DC. His first retrospective was at the Durand-Ruel Galleries, New York in 1947. Other retrospective exhibitions include The Baltimore Museum of Art (1952) and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in both 1960 and 1982. In 2001 and 2002 the major exhibition Milton Avery: The Late Paintings travelled to the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin and the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida.
