J G. Holmes Melbourne 1980, Australian first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 8 1/2 x 11 1/2, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 124 pages, well illustrated with photos and maps, index.---------------------------------------------------------The military mapping of Australia is a task requiring the full time occupation of a trained permanent organization, and to that end, the Survey Section, Royal Australian Engineers, was raised in 1910. Numerically, it was a small unit but was soon to prove itself a very capable one. By 1915 its strength became 3 officers and 17 other ranks, and in that year it became absorbed in the Australian Survey Corps (P.M.F.) newly created by Order-in-Council. Most of its personnel saw overseas service during World War I and continued serving on return in 1919. The need to proceed with mapping remained obvious but there was little increment until 1938 when a three-year programme of expansion provided for a total strength of 97. Following the outbreak of war in 1939, the P.M.F. structure was absorbed in a war establishment attaining about 1700, all ranks. -------------------------------------------------------That expansion with its associated problems of recruitment, training, equipment, and ultimate operations is now recorded. The theatres of operation included the Middle East, the vast Australian mainland, New Guinea, Bougainville and Borneo, and the enormity of the task led to continuous pressure, adaptation and dedication. The earliest demanding commitment in New Guinea was for maps of the Kokoda track but the time factor and the complete absence of pre-war mapping allowed nothing better than dye-line prints showing native tracks and villages as reported by former patrol officers. It was really mapping from the raw. There was to be a marked development leading to the Australian Forces last campaign in Borneo of which HQ 1 Aust. Corps recorded ".never in this war have Australian troops been so well provided with accurate maps, sketches and photo reproductions."The story of that evolution is here told.
