Foreword by Captain Frank S. Conlon, USN (Ret. ) . He writes: "Captain Blee's long personal association with the USS NORTH CROLINA, coupled with the extensive research he has conducted into the ship's history, uniquely qualify him to author this book. I commend it, not only as an authentic and historically accurate documentary, but also as good reading for anyine interested in barttleships, the U. S. Navy, or the sea. " .Captain Blee writes: "Although the NORTH CAROLINA, herself, is at all times the central character of this book, I hope you will understand that always she is but the instrument and symbol of thousands of officers and men in a wide variety of roles, who endured, agonized and exalted with her, and made all her victories possible. Many of the shlip's less significant combat encounters are barely mentioned, and some omitted entirely, to avoid repetition. In some of the more technical sections, such as those explaining how the guns were controlled, it was a challenge to translate naval parlance into language everyone can understand. In both cases, I trust my purposes have been achieved without departing too far from historical or technical accuracy. My goal, above all, has been to preserve the story of this great ship and her magnificent crew of American patriots. " Scores of b/w illustrations, including photos, technical drawings, and data charts. The last four pages of the book consist of a fold-out with technical information. . Guadalcanal. Tulagi. Eastern Solomons. Gilbert Islands. Task Force 58. Marshall Islands. Marianas. Philippine Sea. Iwo Jima. Okinawa. Kamikazes.
