Sometimes old wicker can be found in mint condition, but often, since over the years many pieces were subjected to weather and given hard use, there are varying amounts of damage to the woven material and, perhaps, even to the framework. My purpose in writing this book is to prove this damage can be inexpensively and easily repaired, and older wicker can be completely restored to its original function and beauty by you in your own home! I have been professionally engaged in wicker repair and painting for seven years. This book is based upon my experience in a wide variety of challenging repair situations. This is not an historical perspective of the wicker furniture industry nor is it a dollars and cents guide for the collector; these areas are already sufficiently explored in the current literature (see Bibliography, p. 162). My purpose is to present you with a tried and true system for evaluating the condition of the wicker you see in the marketplace and then to provide step-by-step restoration techniques accompanied by detailed photographs so you can go about making the necessary repairs with skill and confidence. Wicker repair provides an enjoyable challenge with endless variety. Every piece requires a different approach, and very dramatic effects can be achieved with simple yet sound repairs.
