Sassafras Press; 2nd Printing (1983) hardbound w/dj, 6 x 9, VG/VG condition, XV and 160 pages, several illus., index.------------William Harvey Berryhill was almost thirty-four years old when Co. D, 43rd Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers, was formed on April 25, 1862. Leaving behind his wife and five children in Choctaw (now Webster) County, Mississippi, Orderly Sergeant Berryhill traveled with Co. D to points in Alabama and north Mississippi — and to Snyder's Bluff and Vicksburg. He was 1st Lt. Berryhill when he surrendered with the Confederate forces on July 4, 1863, and was sent to parole camp at Columbus, Mississippi. Most of the letters he wrote home during this first year's service were evidently not kept, since during the winter of 1863-64 he was probably with his family some of the time. Beginning with May 1, 1864, however, it is believed that all the letters that reached his family were kept by his wife, Mary, and at her death passed on to their granddaughter, Mary Billy Miles. These letters—some forty plus—detail the experiences of Billy Berryhill from Resaca, Georgia, to Nashville, Tennessee—via Atlanta and Franklin.---------------------------------------Co. D, under the command of Capt. T. B. Thompson and, later, Capt. J. Gilbert, was in Col. Richard Harrison's 43rd Regiment (Col. Moore was killed in the Battle of Corinth). Gen. John Adams was Brigade commander, Gen. W. W. Loring was head of the Division. Gen. Polk was Corps commander until his death during the Georgia campaign, and Gen. Stewart was appointed to take his place. The well-loved Gen. Joe Johnston was leader of the Army of Tennessee until he was replaced by Gen. John Hood at Peachtree Creek just north of Atlanta. These letters reflect the thoughts of one Confederate soldier during these trying times . . . and the title, The Gentle Rebel, is apt.
