This book is written to share the pleasure I've experienced for many years as an armchair treasure hunter and salvor. I've been fascinated throughout my life by the very words "shipwrecked treasure," and the mental visions which they formed: great Spanish galleons rolling across the Atlantic, heavily laden with the metallic riches wrested from the New World; rapacious pirates swarming aboard a hapless merchant vessel, plundering its rich cargo; a top heavy, overloaded galleon, in the grip of a howling hurricane, driven relentlessly toward a foaming reef while the terrified crew and passengers screamed their prayers for succor into the roaring wind.
