(New York: Gjonlekaj Publishing Co., 1989) 0962214108. Albanian Text Collected and Arranged by Shtjefën Gjeçov. Translated, with an Introduction, by Leonard Fox. 4to; original red rexine, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt lettering and Albanian two-headed eagle coat of arms to upper cover; dustwrapper; pp. xx + (iii) + 269; some illustrations. Albanian text to versos, and English translation to facing rectos. A little foxing. Near-fine condition. "The laws and customs included in the Kanun - or Code - of Lekë Dukagjini evolved over a period of many centuries, both before and after the lifetime of the historical personage to whom they are traditionally ascribed. Some may have actually originated among the Illyrians, the ancestors of the Albanians, while it is possible that others date back to remote antiquity - to a period before the vast migration of the Indo-Europeans. Transmitted orally for generations, the laws of the Kanun served for more than five centuries as the foundation of social behavior and self-government for the clans of Northern Albania, even while the region was nominally under Turkish rule. The importance of the Kanun in the history of Albanian people can scarcely be overestimated, and its precepts continue to exercise a very significant influence on Albanians living in Albania and Kosovë, as well as in other countries to which Albanians have emigrated." .
