They created a frenzied world of bootleg booze and a cafe society, which they believed would last forever. But then came World War II. After the war, the Beat Generation took over. Sometimes called "beatniks," their culture include a rejection of mainstream American values, experimentation with drugs and alternate forms of sexuality. We see names now like Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs's and Jack Kerouac. Although the original "Beat Generation" writers met in New York and later gathered in San Francisco, during the 1960s they gave way to "The Sixties Counterculture," a shift in from "beatnik" to "hippie" and began to spread to Paris where they took root. Somber colors, dark shades, and goatees gave way to colorful psychedelic clothing and long hair. The beats were known for keeping a low profile but the hippies became known for making a noise.
