In November 1965 it was proposed among the members of Immanuel Congregational Church (United Church of Christ), Hartford, Connecticut that there be formed a committee on Housing for the Elderly. This was the first step toward the creation of Immanuel House. The proposal explained that the need for such a committee (and for a new facility) arises from both inside and outside the congregation. From inside it arises partly from the position of the two Widows' Homes operated on North Main Street in Hartford. These buildings were deemed neither well located or adequate in size or equipment. From the outside the approach comes mainly from the Federal Government and City of Hartford. The housing director called for such housing to provide living space and a link between churches and people who need the ministry of a church. This volume tells the story of Immanuel House, and will get a taste of 18th century Hartford. Engagingly written and fully illustrated, the book is not only a contribution to the 1996 25th birthday celebration of Immanuel House but a revealing fragment of Hartford social history.
