A sequence of folksy letters begins as a reply to a grandchild's query about a civics assignment. The child's teacher has required the class to obtain opinions on this question: "What was the most significant speech ever made in American History?" The grandfather's reply is surprising because he evades the question, rather citing a letter sent (in lieu of speech) by Abraham Lincoln to some gentlement in Boston in 1859. Some of the grandfather's subsequent letters are his responses to grandchildren's curiosity about certain terms such as Defender of the Faith, axioms, self evident, faith and reason, Magna Carta, Natural Law, pursuit of happiness, Articles of Confederation, un-a-lien-able, etc. Others are initiated by the grandfather himself to fill in gaps he suspects exist in the children's history lessons, such as the sixteenth century origin and connotation of the term, "foederal," and why the word makes the Constitution so unique among all legal documents. A final letter full of vivid imagery and tenderness for the land ends the sequence.
