The fully illustrated book tells the story of a young man who left his comfortable home in Scotland in 1878 to work for the Hudson's Bay Company in the wilds of Northern Alberta. Tom Kerr spent sixty-eight years of his long life in the north country and likely saw more of the land on foot than any other white man. Stories of his travels through the Peace Country are legend. On foot, by ox drawn cart, on horse back, by canoe and river boat, Tom Kerr travelled this vast land moving from place to place to operate Hudson's Bay company trading posts. In later years, he ran his own trading post at his beloved Sturgeon Lake. The book tells of Tom's travels throughout the Peace River country and provides historical vignettes about various communities and events along the way. As an example, in 1881 Tom was sent by the Hudson's Bay Post manager at Dunvegan to locate and build a post at what is now Grande Prairie. Thus, Kerr built the first commercial building in what is now the vibrant city of Grande Prairie. Newspapers of the day provided valuable insights and helped the author, Les McLaughlin, write a colourful story about the early days in the Peace: Possibly no man who ever lived in the north has had more thrilling experiences and battled more hardships than the oldest man of the original Hudson's Bay men, Tom Kerr, now living at Sturgeon Lake. (Grande Prairie Herald, 1930) When Scotland born Tom Kerr migrated to Canada and reached Peace River Crossing in 1878 to help build the first house in what is now the town of Peace River, he was one of the earliest frontiersmen to venture into the Peace River country. He remained to see Hudson's Bay Company traps beaten into plowshares and Indian camps converted into thriving towns.
