"Because of Maria Chela Chikueka's status as an educated Christian woman, she was a target during Angola's civil war. Like two million other Angolans, she lived in the bush on the run for two years between 1977 and 1979. Some lived on the run for up to 20 years. She experienced discrimination when looking for work. And when she did find a good job that she liked working in a laboratory at a university, she still was not satisfied because she felt she should be doing more to help people.
