Most golfers are in denial about their game. It is indeed a long way from the practice range to the first tee. Yet each year, everyday golfers, convinced there is a short cut, will pay whatever it takes for the latest equipment that they honestly believe will transform them into the "Office Champion" seemingly overnight. More people should do as Tiger Woods does, play their best, and above all, have FUN!!! From the Inside Flap The Birth Of A Sport Golf. It all began in the rolling purple hills of the Scottish highlands. We cannot say exactly how it happened, but we can guess. Perhaps a kilted Scot was standing one cool day upon the bleak windswept heath, leaning upon his gnarled walking stick, with nothing to do but watch over his flock of sheep. At his feet was a round pebble. In the distance, a rabbit hole. "Ah, Hamish," he said to himself, eyeing these objects, "Would ye care to play a wee game I´ve just thought of." "Och, I´ve the time to spare," he replied. And so he played the first round of a new game – in Gaelic they call it dhuichcachgh. The English translation, "Chase a sheep to the rabbit hole, and hit it with a stick, then throw the round rock at it". It was a good game – but not a great game. The shepherd tried new games – games like Impale the Sheep on a Stick, and Mc-Kendo, the Scottish art of stick-to-stick combat. In his lonely vigil, he also discovered the dark secrets of the love between a man and a sheep, the creature Robert Burns would call, "Tha´ beastie, tha´ schemin´ wooly, other woman." Finally, one sheep, tired of watching all this, and afraid of becoming a participant, picked up a stick between the teeth, and took a healthy swing at the pebble. The pebble soared higher, higher, then came down, down, down, striking the ground, bouncing, then rolling straight into the rabbit hole. Hamish watched in amazement, and knew at once that a new sport had been born. Golf. Invented by sheep, perfected by Scots.
