This handbook has been assembled because to date there has been little available literature on coal-related geophysical logging. The manual is intended to present information for anyone working in the coal industry. An effort has been made to present information in an understandable form for those who are not geophysicists. It is hoped that the handbook will promote better communication between the explorationist and the logging engineer and lead to better interpretation of the logs. The handbook gives the essential theory and practice of geophysical logging as it applies to coal exploration and is not designed as a theoretical textbook. Part I contains a brief history of geophysical logging, basic coal geology, and an introduction to coal exploration. Part II describes for each logging tool the theory, uses, limitations, typical responses, tool design, units of measurement, and calibration. Part III addresses such geological questions as seam thickness determination and coal quality evaluation. Part IV includes guidelines for a successful logging program.
