251 pages, of interest to medical historians, many taken directly from the Hudson's Bay Archives in Winnipeg - includes INDEX. 26 pages of introductory remarks - mostly biographical of William Smellie M.D. Smellie applied from his home in the Orknies, in April 1845 for a posting with the Honorable Company. He served in York Factory (Manitoba) from August of that year until September 1849. He'd signed on for a 5 year contract but was sent home early - see biography for details. He seems to have been a cultured man in a rather `rough-and-tumble' environment - a misfit. The medical records give detailed prescriptions, which were very much of the day (Colichicum Wine, Powdered Rhubarb), for such ailments as tuberculosis, fracture, diarrhea, heart disease, lumbago, drunkenes, and scurvy. Patients are identified by name and some times occupation (voyageur). Most were HBCo. employees or First Nations people living near the post. Sometimes affiliations are given - Massan's Child or Saunder's Wife. Very interesting historical window. (Lead author is a pharmacist.) In addition to two maps 3 b/w drawings assist text - e.g. : one of the ship that took Smellie both to and from Canada.
