Impressed by stories of adventure recounted to him by the grizzled, old scout ants living in retirement in the ant colony, Frank, the Ant decides to set out on his own to explore the empty spaces which stretch beyond the cupboard as far as the eye can see. In his exploration of what is, in fact, the kitchen of a local family of humans, Frank is joined along the way by Ezra the silverfish, Fred the flea, and the helpful but hungry Harry, the fly. After a series of adventures during which the explorers come to see firsthand the human giants who live among them, Frank and Ezra make their way back to the colony where their own stories become part of the oral tradition of the community. Frank was written for young readers interested in "chapter books". It is intended to challenge and pique the curiosity of the able student. It is scientifically accurate within the bounds of poetic license, and, to the extent possible, depicts an insect-centered world rather than the world as seen from our own vantage point. The text develops the theme that individuals often see things quite differently from their fellows and that these differences are often the product of our prior expectations. Illustrated with simple black and white line drawings, the reader is invited to use his or her imagination to enter the world described in the text. Hardcover, Label: A. Gelston, A. Gelston, Product group: Book, Published: 1994-12-01, Studio: A. Gelston, Sales rank: 18559318.
