Assuredly Messrs. Hemminge and Condell, the so-called editors of the First Folio were very handsomely treated when a monument, even if no very costly one, was erected to their memory, a few years ago. Mr. Lee evidently considers that their supervision was only of the most perfunctory kind, in fact, that they did little more than supply all the copy which could be found in the archives of the playhouse. Among the many volumes put forth in connection with the St. Louis exposition is one by the Honorable Binger Hermann, which the Burrows Brothers Company are publishing. It is called The Louisiana Purchase and Our Title West of the Rocky Mountains, and contains much interesting matter concerning the Gadsden Purchase, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and Thomas Jefferson s important connection with the exploration and purchase of the Louisiana territory. A work in German on the Regensburg school of manuscript decoration in the tenth and eleventh centuries comes from the hand of Adolph Goldschmidt. Thirty-five plates add value to the book. In it are traced the local and historical influences, and the relations of the Regensburger manuscripts to those of other schools, as the Hildesheimer. A new limited edition (three hundred copies) of Henry Fielding s Voyage to Lisbon is being printed at the Riverside Press. The type is a new font, the paper Dickinson hand-made. The frontispiece is a photogravure after Hogarth s portrait of Fielding. While the American book-auction season is nearing its close, London sales, as Mr. Pollard s letter points out, are going at full speed. The White sale, of which we gave quotations last month, aggregated 18,116, 13a. The Lefferts Americana sale took place at Sotheby s on June 9 and 10. Detailed reports have not yet reached us, but we know that the sale was not financially as successful as the sale of the English literature section at Bangs s rooms in May. The highest price was fetched by Eliot s Indian Bible, which sold for 370. A fine collection of illuminated manuscripts was sold at Soth.
