Lines on Seeing the Grand Children at Play I am thinking, sitting, thinking Of the by-gone days of yore When I had some bright eyed darlings Playing on the cottage floor. How they tossed the ball and rattle, Laughing, romping full of iglee, Full of fun and childish prattle--Pleasant sport twas sweet to see. How they threw their arms about me Lisping in their fond embrace, Many a sweet and tender accent Food for thought for after days. Yet I longed to see them larger, Thought the time looked far ahead, When to mans and womans stature They should come with bolder tread. But almost before I knew it Came the silent fleet of time, Carrying onward, up to manhood, All those precious babes of mine--Launched them out upon the ocean Of a world of joy and care, Plunged them into lifes commotion, Granting each an ample share. Then they sought a life companion Binding close in marriage tie, Next, a quiet cot to dwell in Suited to their tasteful eye. Now I see their own dear children Playing on the cottage floor; Bidding me--the march is onward--Onward toward the eternal shore. 1874. IF CHRIST WERE TO COME TO DAMASCUS By Leander M. Stanley If Christ were to come to Damascus--Least wise it seems so to me--He would find his disciples numbered Less than the sands of the sea; He would find in his holy temple Hearts that were cheerless and cold. Bowed down at the throne of an Idol--The Idol of beautiful Gold. If Christ were to come to Damascus, Methinks I could hear him say: Ye are full of the dead mens bodies, Oh bear the corpses away--For my Temples are filled with Fashion, Your service is given to Baal, Ye come unto me empty handed, The words of my truth assail; Your closets of prayer are forsaken, You pray unto men for meed, You pass by a brother in scorning Becau. . .
