Do the prophecies contained in Is. 40--66 proceed, either not wholly, or not at all, from the period of the Babylonian exile? (a) Are the Prophecies partially Post-Exilic? I purposely do not begin with the extreme position. It might well be the case that some passages in Is. 40 ff. are of secondary origin without necessitating the carrying forward of the date of publication of the whole body of this composition beyond the period of the Babylonian exile ending B.C. 536. We have even in the course of our preceding investigation noted secondary elements in Is. 40 ff. But, to begin with, the insertion of 4219-23, as accounted for on p. 6 5 f. above, does not carry us beyond the end of the Exile. Further, in view of the distributive method of description in Is. 40 ff. which has been explained above (p. 45), it cannot be asserted with certainty that the exhibition of the double mission of the Servant of Jahweh contained in 496 was occasioned by the particularism which showed itself amongst the returned exiles, in the first instance against the Samaritans (Ezr. 43). In the Book of Jonah, if I may bring this forward by way of comparison, a more pronounced aversion of one party of the Judaeans to the universalism of the Kingdom of Jahwehl may be detected. Considering the exact parallelism which I have shown (p. 11 f.) to hold between the main parts of ch. 53 and of 521S15, the most probable supposition is that 521315 and ch. 53 were published at the same time. Further, on account of the employment of the absolute term 'My Servant' (5213), and on account of the conjunction of this term with 'nations' (v.14), it appears to me most natural to understand this Servant of...
