Old Murray is represented with pipe in hand, as it is said that on Lord Byron asking him what he thought of his portrait, he replied, "It can't be a good likeness without my pipe," on which Lord Byron at once desired the painter to introduce the long clay pipe. There is also a portrait of Jackson, the pugilist, commonly called "Gentleman Jackson." The bed room is a moderately sized apartment, with no pretensions to luxury. The bed is rather a ponderous affair, with gilt posts, each of which is surmounted with a baron's coronet. The room is, perhaps, the most interesting in the house, and cannot fail to inspire the visitor with a feeling akin to reverence. What glorious ideas had birth in this very spot, in that heavenendowed mind, gifted with a genius almost inspired, and which elevated its possessor to a level with the greatest poets, ancient or modern? At night used Byron to stand at this window, musing, and like Goethe receive inspiration from the scene before him, when half the world was buried in slumber. Byron's genius must have revelled in the moon-lit landscape; the placid lake, fed by the gentle river, "clear as crystal: swift as human life," on the borders of which the water-loving trees hang; the strange, placid, plaintive music of the cascade; the boundless grandeur of the forest, from the midst of which tower a score of mill-crowned hills; and afar off, the turrets and spires of the distant town--all these form a tout ensemble, which, viewed from the window by day is enchanting, and by night possesses a beauty indescribable.
