A LL in some vale remote Ill live, Far from the worlds loud noise; There neither love, nor hate, nor grieve, But feast on sober joys. In peaceful ways, my golden time, As limpid streams shall flow, Unknown to care, disease, or crime; Not kings live always so. Along the meadows will I sport, With lambs in harmless glee; Not such the joys the wanton court, But such the sports for me! Say, does the beau, of essence vain, A scent so sweet exhale, As yonder odours of the plain, That load the balmy gale Or does the belle so sweetly smile, In vestments not her own, As flowers, that neither spin nor toil, In Natures robes alone Lo in the rose, with crimson light, The pearly dew-drops shine; More sweet the rose, the pearls more bright, Than, wanton Sappho, thine! Do balls or concerts charm the eat, Or gaudy lamps the eye; Like the full music of the year, Or glow of vernal sky See warbling larks in ether float! Their strains how wild and free! Tis heart-felt rapture swells the note, And such the strains for me. Thus, far removd from pleasures vain, And grandeurs dazzling glare, I reign the monarch of the plain; For solid bliss is there. No more from folly, or from pride, I climb Lifes dangerous ways; But climb the mountains verdant side, And sing to Natures praise. LOVE LOVE And WISDOM: A VISION. J twas in the morn of youthful days, When Love a thousand various ways Assaults the heart, in shape or air, Or graceful ringlets of the Fair; Or else in wits enchanting wiles, More sure th unwary heart beguiles: When Pallas stronger arms supplies, As deems the suffrage of the wise, Than all. the lightening of the eyes: Brings fair Discretion, ever-young, Equips with Eloquence the tongue, And from behind her shield of length, Shoots darts of more . . .
