Robert Chambers wrote a most valuable and interesting book upon the subject called Ancient Sea Margins as memorials of changes in the relative level of sea and land. 8 vo. cloth, London 1848, postpaid $2.50. Mr. Rider will send it, the affair of the Diamond in Narragansett Bay. These points have been so carefully considered and elaborately wrought, that this portion of our inquiry must await the next succeeding issue of Book Notes. It may not be absolutely necessary that the Governor of Rhode Island should be able to calculate an eclipse; possibly he need not be able to write English as Matthew Arnold wrote it; but there are certain functions devolving upon the Executive Chief Officer of this state which seem to require some slight ability to read, even if someone else is employed to do the writiug. The recent exhibitions of Rhode Island s Chief Executive, at the University, and at the College of Mechanic Arts were enough to make men blush for very shame. In the matters of dignity, of refinement, of manners, and of education the exhibition was simply shocking.
