THE human breast has been frequently and aptly compared to the sea; the passions bearing as unrestrained-a sway over it as the winds do over the Ocean: it is sometimes tossed to and fro by violence of contending passions, and sometimes carried along in a torrent by one; it is now illumined by the gleams of hope, and now darkened by the clouds of despair; it is now lulled to reft by rhe calm of content, and now put in motion by the turbulence of ambition. It is however ordained by an allwise Providence, that most of our passions, when under the guidance of reason shall tend to a good and useful end. The mutual inclination of the human human kind toward a different sex, vvhert under such a restraint as checks any propensity to a riotous licentiousness, is well calculated to remove the Consequences which must attend an unprofitable celibacy. It is the property of anger, when guided by reason, to mark our disapprobation of what is wrong; nor can it be called an evil affection till by its duration it becomes uncharitable, or by its impetuosity dangerous. We are not forbidden by the scriptures to be angry, for it seems to be considered as a quality inherent in the principles of our nature. We are, however, forbidden to let the fun go down upon our wrath, lest the harbouring of such a passion long should impair our benevolence; and, to prevent our being carried away by the sudden and vehement impulses of it, we are enjoined when angry not to sin.
