A Fireproof City Hotel Maximum utility and safety together with moderate cost are objects sought in a five-story building of concrete now under way in Chicago. The first floor is to be used as a store and the upper four floors as a lodging house of 435 rooms. The building is of reinforced concrete frame, is 50 x 111 feet in plan and rests on spread concrete footings. The floors are 8-inch concrete slabs and will be covered with maple flooring. The curtain walls are of cement tile which will be exposed on three sides, but the front is to be faced with pressed brick and stone. The building is designed for a live load of 60 pounds up stairs and no pounds on the first floor. The panels are 17 x r8 feet and the columns start 24 inches in diameter, are 20 inches on the first floor and 18 inches above. The second floor consists of a 50 x 50 foot lobby with offices adjoining. The balance of the second and all other floors are divided into small rooms 6x6 feet, containing a cot and chair each. The floors are tiled through the lobby and office only. The room divisions are of corrugated iron and the doors are flush veneered birch, these and the maple flooring being the only inflammable parts of the entire building. Steel sash have been used on the sides and rear but not on the front exposure. All windows are glazed with wire glass. The cost of this building will be, unequipped, about 45, 000. With heating, lighting and all toilet facilities, the cost will be in the neighborhood of 80, 000. The) building itself will thus cost 1. 62 per square foot of floor area, which is a remarkably low figure for as small a building as this, approximating the cost per square foot obtained in large factory buildin. . .
