Excerpt from The Training and Treatment of the Horse In connection with the above subject I would like to call the attention of the reader to one more fact, which is well known to all who handle hors es, and that is that the herse, especially in the summer time, is constantly af¿icted with a sore back caused by the galling of the saddle.´ When the sore is discovered the owner´s first step is to apply some remedy to heal the sore, but he pays no attention whatever to the cause of the sore. The Excerpt from The Training and Treatment of the Horse In connection with the above subject I would like to call the attention of the reader to one more fact, which is well known to all who handle hors es, and that is that the herse, especially in the summer time, is constantly af¿icted with a sore back caused by the galling of the saddle.´ When the sore is discovered the owner´s first step is to apply some remedy to heal the sore, but he pays no attention whatever to the cause of the sore. The cause is usually found in the driver. When he stops the horse he jumps onto the shafts on one side or the other and then to the ground. When he gets ready to start again he jumps onto the shafts and then to his seat. The average weight of the driver is from one hundred twenty five-to one hundred sixty pounds. Is it to be won dered at that when this weight is thrown on the shafts on one side or the other,w1th the ordinary harness as it is usually used, that the horse´s back can be anything else but sore? The part of the back covered by the saddle is usually very tender,= caused by constant perspiration in the summer time and no opportunity given to dry out by reason of the air.
