Of the latter, many predeceased Mr. Smith, but unknown to him, and these have now as far as possible been traced. In the new book 765 entirely new names have been introduced, and, with less than a dozen exceptions, these have all been accounted for in the present volume. In the grand total of 1433 names, it has been thought advisable to include those of some officers who never actually served in it: some of these exchanged into the Regiment in order to retire by' sale Of commission, and on doing so were given brevet pro motion as o?icers Of the Riñe Brigade, and others exchanged to half pay of the corps from other regiments. The Compiler would wish to express his sincere thanks to the many Officers and others to whom he is indebted for various information.
