He was descended from a respectable family in Wiltshire, and having received the rudiments of his education at a country school, was sent to Westminster at the age of thirteen, and from thence, in 1668, removed to Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he took the degree of Master of Arts on the 31 of June, 1676. Though he resided at College thirteen years, a much longer time than is usually spent at the University, Doctor Johnson is of opinion that he did not devote his time and attention to those pursuits which generally occupy the minds of students; because, in his poems, there are many errors respecting the names of nations and places, which he seems to have introduced without having taken the pains to ascertain their propriety.
